Why don’t all embryos grow the same?

It’s a great question, and one we receive a lot! Although patients may have several embryos developing post-IVF retrieval, they all don’t always reach their full potential. Embryos may look similar at some stages, but differ greatly over time, due to chromosome imbalances or from simply lacking “energy”. The following video illustrates this; the embryo on the right develops in a healthy manner, while the example on the left fails to continue growing.

Check out our cool lab video, which show what great (and not so great) embryos look like.

If you are having difficulty conceiving, there are many professional fertility resources in the Evansville area that can help you discover the causes of your infertility and develop a treatment plan to help increase your chances of conceiving a healthy child.

Fertility doctors in Evansville will typically diagnose you with infertility based on your age and how long you have been trying to conceive. If the female partner is under 35 and the couple has been trying to conceive for a year or more, the couple is diagnosed with infertility. If the female partner is 35 or older, the infertility diagnosis takes six months.

Our Evansville doctors will work with you to discover and treat the root causes of your infertility. The tests may uncover issues with the female reproductive system, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, or they may find that the male partner’s sperm is not viable. In fact, a significant number of infertility cases in the U.S. are a result of male infertility factor. Your doctor will also take into account any lifestyle, diet, stress, or health issues which can negatively affect fertility.

Once you and your doctor have identified potential causes of your infertility, the doctor will develop a treatment plan. Infertility treatment can consist of treatments like in vitro fertilization or intrauterine insemination, or your doctor may recommend beginning with less invasive treatments such as lifestyle changes and medication before trying IVF. Having a treatment plan laid out will show you the total costs and allow you to determine whether or not your health insurance will cover the treatment.
